1/3.5-scale Rutan Boomerang

1/3.5-scale Rutan Boomerang

Check out this one-of-a-kind model of a one-of-a-kind aircraft! Designed by Erwin Schmelzer and flown here by Gerhard Grambow, this unique Rutan Model 202 Boomerang has a 125.9-inch wingspan and is powered by two Saito FG 57 TS four-strokes. The composite fuselages, cowlings, tips, vertical stabilizer were made using 3D-printing and molds. The wings and horizontal stabilizers are made of Styrodur (insulation board), carbon-fiber and Abachi sheeting. Erwin notes, “The construction time was two and a half years, but with a few interruptions. It is difficult to estimate the time required, but it was around 700 hours each time. Only a high-quality 3-view and many photos from the Internet were available for the construction.” This model is, like the original, the only existing aircraft of this type. It’s a stunner!

  1. Wow – nice job on an unusual subject! Congrats!! 🙂

  2. Great job building and flying.

  3. This is one of the most unique and brilliant designs from the genius that is Burt Rutan. I use this as an example of how you go from a set of requirements to a finished aircraft design in my university aircraft design class. The model is beautifully done!
