Most trips included some stick time, but never solo. Most of these were in RAF aircraft but one trip was in the Kings Cup Air Race. One trip from RAF Kenley in Surrey, I told the pilot that I had a PPL and he let me do the take off. This was my first take off on a hard runway, all previous flights had been from grass with no marked runway. I didn’t allow for slight crosswind and drifted off to side. The field had a hump in the middle and I didn’t see a tractor cutting the grass until the last minute. I flew over him at about 20 feet which must a scared the driver a bit. I learnt to fly on Tiger Moths at Croydon, so the Chipmunk was an easy transition. a couple of years ago at Oshkosh I had dinner with a couple of Chipmunk owners at the Tiger Moth dinner.

You set the ratchet to about 5 and control through the rudder bar is fantastic, the best! No crossing hands, just right on stick, left on throttle. It does not stall-turn,as well as a Tiger or loop,in fact it will flick out of a loop if pulled slightly too much at 120kts.It will swing on landing.Ailerons nicer than a Tigers. But Tiger gets airborne quicker! Many mandatory mods to airframe.Engine 15 h.p.more than standard Tiger.

One that became very famous was a Carl Goldberg kit. I had one I built in 1986 that was such a wonderful flying kit that I bought one extra plus my uncle gave me one that I haven’t built yet. In 1986 I took pictures of my Chipmunk down from the Bay Area where I lived to the Realto Airport where he was based to show his wife. She was very happy, so much so her eyes started to tear up showing me her charming and kind soul. His dog “Aileron” was pretty cool too. She had given me a shirt, an Art Sholl pin plus several very nice pictures hand autographed by Art. I never met him in real life but if his wife was any indication of his demeanor then he was probably one heck of a guy. You are definitely missed and loved by everyone in the aeronautical community. RIP Art.
