I’m the person restraining the model and have seen loads of models started! This is the normal method of hand starting these engines. Richard scratch built the Spitfire and flies it in a very scale manner. He is a very smooth pilot. I have a feeling there was a crosswind at that show which the Spitfire doesn’t like when landing. He does do aerobatics with it but as he is flying in formation with the Bronco he might not have done so on this flight. Or, maybe the cameraman didn’t capture amy if he was following the Bronco during part of the flight.

Very nice airplane, and agree on safety that was overlooked, the flying was also a tad to be desired, as the airframe is capable of some aerobatics, pilot needs to get comfortable with the craft to produce better landings, congratulations ro the lady helping the pilot this is a rare scene, and great support

Yes, good clearance from a spinning propeller is usually a very important thing. If he was to slip when close in, the result doesn’t bear thinking about. But, a superb model.

Gorgeous airplane- terrible pilot positions while starting and revving the engine.

One thoughtless step, one off-balance mistake and they will haul the plane off the field, haul the pilot to the hospital, while the rest of the field crew cleans up the blood and shredded clothes.
