Learn to slip the aircraft!

I’m one who falls under the “keep it fast so it won’t stall” camp, burned into my brain many years ago. The key is to practice the approach at a safe altitude and know how your model flies at slow speed.

Close, but not exact of course. For one thing, bounces are much less extreme on the simulator, and it seems all planes fly more steady than in real life. However, the simulator lets you learn how to control the transmitter for the action you want. It lets you get comfortable with reversing the aileron controls when it comes back toward you, for instance. If you can fly and land with the simulator, chances are your first flight with an actual RC plane will most likely let you end up with a plane you can fly again, without any repairs!

Grunt labor jobs, 4 children and no money for most of my adult life. Now 75 and retired, I bought a real flight simulator and try to fly like your lessons in the magazine. If flying on the simulator is even CLOSE to the real thing THANKS!

My field has high trees all around and doesn’t allow a long approach , any thoughts ?

As per full size the correct attitude is trimmed to hold the desired approach speed. If trimmed correctly reducing power will steepen the descent angle, and adding power lessens the descent rate. I look for a cloud or feature on the horizon and keep the aircraft in front of it. This will result in the aircraft passing at eye level, so at the later stages of the approach power is reduced to let the aircraft descend towards the runway threshold. From there just flare with a little elevator and the aircraft should settle on its main wheels just in front of you. from there practice is the route to perfect landings

Excellent article for the beginner, novice, intermediate and even advanced pilot. I’ve been flying for close to 30 years and I am never too old to brush up on quality knowledge/wisdom.
